ABOUT HEIDI

Heidi James is an American filmmaker, director, founder of Ranch Productions, and award-winning screenwriter whose work explores the lives of outsiders, rebels, and renegades—often inspired by extraordinary true stories—through emotionally charged narratives infused with dark humor, original music, visceral choreography, and bold cinematic style. As Principal Writer of Ranch Productions, she is leading the development of an ambitious slate of feature films and television series driven by compelling characters, emotional complexity, and socially resonant themes.

Originally from Austin, Texas, Heidi was born into a family of storytellers. Her father, Edwin Neal, is best known for his unforgettable performance as the Hitchhiker in *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre* (1974), while her mother was a playwright, actress, and beloved drama teacher. At seven years old, Heidi began performing in her family's traveling roadshow, an unconventional childhood that immersed her in theater, music, and the transformative power of storytelling. That multidisciplinary foundation continues to shape her filmmaking, blending performance, music, movement, and visual design into immersive cinematic experiences that illuminate the human condition.

Before moving behind the camera, Heidi spent a lifetime as a performer, acting in regional theater from an early age. She later toured internationally as a vocalist, became a company member of the renowned Off-Broadway 29th Street Rep, and performed leading roles in works by Sam Shepard, Elizabeth Gilbert, Shira Piven, and other acclaimed playwrights and directors. She trained with legendary acting teachers William Esper, Larry Moss, Wynn Handman, and Susan Batson—an education that continues to inform her work with actors and her commitment to psychologically rich storytelling.

Heidi transitioned to screenwriting in 2020. Within just a few years, her work earned more than twenty major screenwriting awards and placed her among the Top 1% of writers on Coverfly's Red List. She has since developed multiple feature films and television series spanning female-driven psychological thrillers, historical dramas, crime stories, music-driven narratives, and independent dramas.

Her feature screenplay *The Man Who Changed the World* stars Wallace Shawn, Chris Lowell, and Jeanine Mason. She recently completed production on her directorial debut, *The Quads & The Kicker*, a stylized neo-noir thriller and the first in a slate of films and series she plans to write and direct.

Whether writing or directing, Heidi is drawn to stories about flawed people searching for belonging, redemption, and freedom. Her work celebrates resilience, challenges convention, and finds unexpected beauty in those living on society's margins. Through every project, she seeks to create cinematic experiences that are emotionally fearless, visually distinctive, and deeply human.
